Ai-jirushi Hanafu is a traditional indigo dyeing technique that is registered as a non-intangible cultural heritage. One of its characteristics is that the best of both worlds is fused into the stencil carving technique, resulting in many gorgeous patterns. Indigo discharge dyeing is a method in which the fabric is first dyed in indigo and then the color is removed. A stencil is placed on top, and a special discharge paste is placed on top of it, causing the color to fade to white in the areas where the paste is placed. Komon, which has very fine patterns carved, and chugata and arabesque, which have medium-sized patterns carved, are typical examples, and this unique technique was widely used in Japan.
